Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium. The exact components and ratios will depend on the grade and intended use of the stainless steel, but in order to be designated as stainless, it must contain a minimum of 10.5% chromium.
What is the difference between alloy steel and stainless steel?
Alloy steel is typically used in high-demand applications that require high-strength materials, such as manufacturing or construction. Alloy steel is composed primarily of iron, but may also contain materials such as chromium, carbon, silicon, manganese, vanadium, chromium, nickel, tungsten, or molybdenum.
Stainless steel is a variety of alloy steel that contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium, which gives it a high resistance to corrosion, as well as a bright shine that makes it well-suited for consumer applications. Stainless steel is typically not as strong as other steel alloys.
What is duplex stainless steel?
As the name implies, duplex stainless steel combines characteristics from two different alloy categories, austenitic and ferritic. Combining the two types reduces weaknesses and creates an alloy with up to the twice the strength of the original materials — often at a lower cost than other alloys. There are different series of duplex stainless steels, with Cumberland primarily dealing in 2205.
How does aluminum alloy compare to stainless steel?
When comparing similar shapes and thicknesses, stainless steel will always be stronger, but the aluminum alloys will also weigh approximately 2/3 less.
