Duplex Stainless Steel

2205 duplex stainless steel stack

High strength with exceptional corrosion resistance

Duplex stainless steel has a two-phase microstructure consisting of austenite and ferrite in equal parts, giving the metal a unique blend of properties from both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. Alloys in this series tend to have higher strength and higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking than most austenitic alloys and greater toughness than ferritic alloys, particularly at lower temperatures.

As your 2205 duplex stainless steel supplier, we buy and sell 2205, one of the most widely used duplex stainless steels. Its high strength and superior corrosion resistance make it an excellent choice for very harsh environments, such as off-shore drilling applications.

Duplex stainless steel properties

Because it combines favorable characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, the mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel make it a highly versatile alloy suitable for a wide range of applications. Despite its high strength, hardness, and toughness, it still has excellent ductility and resistance to corrosion cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about 2205 duplex stainless steel

What is duplex stainless steel?

Duplex stainless steel is an alloy with a two-phase microstructure consisting of equal proportions of austenite and ferrite. This structure gives it excellent properties of both steels, most notably high strength, hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance.

How is duplex stainless steel vs. 316 stainless steel?

Duplex stainless steel has higher strength and stronger resistance to corrosion than 316 stainless steel. But because 316 also has excellent corrosion resistance and is often more readily available, it’s often the alloy of choice for less demanding applications.

What is 2205 duplex stainless steel’s chemical composition?

2205 duplex stainless steel is typically composed of 22% – 23% chromium, 4.5% – 6.5% nickel, 3% – 3.5% molybdenum, 0.14% to 0.20% nitrogen, <2% manganese, <1% silicon, <0.03% carbon, <0.03% phosphorus, <0.02% sulfur, and other trace elements. The composition may vary slightly based on the manufacturer and desired application, but these common elements create a strong, hard alloy with exceptional corrosion resistance.

What is the density of 2205 duplex stainless steel?

The density of 2205 duplex stainless steel is about 7.8g/cm³ (grams per cubic centimeter), which is similar to that of other stainless steels. This value may vary slightly, depending on the manufacturing process and the specific composition of the steel.
